Bagamoyo
Bagamoyo is one of East Africa's most historically compelling settles and was, at one time, among the most important harbors along the East African coast. Beginning in the 13th century, the city was a major center along a trading route to ship goods to the Middle East and Asia. The city also later became an important springboard for European exploration, and the famous explorers Livingstone, Stanley and Burton are all known to have stayed here. Bagamoyo was also a central hub of the slave trade with over 50,000 African slaves shipped through the city each year. In the late 19th century, the city was also briefly made the capital of German East Africa. Today, you can still view the ruins of Bagamoyo's rich past and tour some of the remaining buildings of its storied history. The city is also surrounded by beautiful beaches, and during your visit to the town, you will have a chance to relax on the beach and go snorkeling.
